1.A minimum wage of 40 cents per hr was establish on July 12,. How much would pay for 4o hrs wkly minimum wage

2.Lou Dillions became the first American racehorse to break the two-minute mile barrier on August 24, 1903. He galloped to a win at Readville, Maine, in 1 minute, 58,5 seconds. How fast did he run?
3.John Sigmund of St. Louis, Missouri, completed a 292 mile swim down the Mississippi River on July 29, 1940. It took him 89 hours and 48 minutes to swim from St. Lois to Caruthersville, Missouri. What was his average speed?
4. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 2635.84 after a gain of 43.84 points on August 10, 1937. What was the Dow Jones Industrial Average at the beginning of that day?
5. On July 22, 1933, aviator Wiley his first around the world in his famous flight in his famous olane, the "Winnie Mae," He travelled 15,596 miles in 7 days, 18 hours, and 45 mintes. What was his average speed?

Questions 2, 3, and 5 are very similar. The three questions seem to require that the units of time be manipulated slightly. At least in the US, speeds are expressed in miles per hour. You could express the speed as miles per minute, miles per day, inches per second, or even something as foolish as Pepsi Bottles per fortnight, and technically you'd be correct, but the answer may not be useful. Questions 1 and question 4 are simple arithmitic questions.

Double check my work. I may or may not intentionally gave you the wrong answers (but the methods I used are correct, just the numbers might not be). Math is very important. I am showing you how to do your work. Look at what I did and try to understand how I did it.

Question 1: If one hour of work is $0.40, then the answer would be $0.40/hr * 40 hours. The answer would be $16.00

Question 2: It is easiest to begin by converting 58.5 seconds to a portion of a minute expressed as a decimal. To do this, divide 58.5 seconds by 60 seconds (the answer being 0.975). The time expressed as a decimal is 1.975 minutes. In this time, the horse ran 1 mile. To find the answer, perform the following:

1 mile / 1.975 minutes (this will give you miles per minute) = 0.51 miles/minute. However, speed is expressed in miles per hour, so to convert it...

(0.51 miles/minute) * (60 minutes / 1 hr).

The horse's speed is 30.38 MPH

Question 3: Similar to question 2, begin by converting 48 minutes to a decimal portion of an hour (48 minutes / 60 minutes) or 0.8. The total time can be expressed as 89.8 hours.

To figure out the speed, divide the distance by the time (292 miles / 89.8 hours). The speed is 3.25 MPH

Question 4: If the Dow closes at 2635.84 after gaining 43.84 points, that would mean that the Dow began at 2635.84 - 43.84 or 2592

Question 5: This one is a little more complex as you have three units of time (days, hours, and minutes). To get an answer of miles per hour, the time needs to be in hours.

So how many hours is 7 days? 7 days * 24 hours/day = 168 hours.

How many hours is 45 minutes? 45 minutes / (60 minutes/hour) = 0.75 hours.

The total time is 186.75 hours (168 hours + 18 hours + 0.75 hours).

The speed will be distance/time or 15596 miles / 186.75 hours. The answer is 83.51 MPH
