ME 262 delayed into production?
What caused the delay in the introduction of the ME262 into Luftwaffe service?
I've heard about problems with the reliability of the Jumo engines and Hitler's insistence it be used as a fighter-bomber, allied bombing.....
What were the real reasons? What would have happened had it began to be introduced a year earlier?
The Me-262 was a technical marvel, and a failure in service for reasons that were insurmountable given the position of Germany. Fuel was at a premium, as were pilots. It was something of a "widowmaker" being temperamental on or near the ground, and also a sitting duck during take-off and landing. Superior allied tactics took advantage of this.
The Jumo engines had a short service life and were prone to flame-out and fires. Spares were difficult to source. Had it come in earlier, it is still unlikely to have made much of an impact. Put simply: the German war machine was exhausted by 1943, and resources were scarce.
Fighter bombing, as you note, was a compromise for this design, It excelled as an interceptor, and the bombing role (insisted by Hitler) hampered it's use.
There were several Allied aircraft that could face up to the 262. The latter versions of Spitfire, the Mosquito, the Hawker Typhoon and the P-52 and P-47. The only allied jet in WW2 (the Gloster Meteor) never saw action against the Me-262, was slower and less aerodynamically advanced. Ironically it had a very long service life (derivatives were still serving in the 1970's), was far more reliable and much safer to fly.
