From Matchbox
is rob thomas (the singer from Matchbox 20 who is doing music on his own now) emo?
I kinda want to know I mean if you listen to his songs most of them are sad. he is one of my favorite artists. (along with my chemical romance and maroon5.) oh and not the stereo type emos who cut themselves cause not all emos cut. But i watched some of his videos and they lead me to believe this (watch push and if your gone {these are from when he was in his band Matchbox 20}) and you will see my point. and so I want to know if he is. thx.
You are pretty much asking if Rob Thomas is depressed, am I right? Most times when people say "emo", they are most likely referring to "the stereotype emos who cut themselves" and music like "Ohio is for Lovers" by Hawthorne Heights, "Helena" by My Chemical Romance, or "The Leaving Song Pt. II" by AFI. At least I interpret it that way. I have heard that the first emo bands were nothing like the bands I just mentioned. Apparently, emo has been around since the 80's and the music was more "underground" and less exaggerated. I doubt you are referring to that type of emo, but I thought I'd just throw that in here.
I tried searching for anything related to him suffering from chronic depression, but nothing comes up. I don't know too much about Rob Thomas, nor Matchbox 20, because I am not a fan, but perhaps he just likes writing sad songs. There's a lot of musicians like that.
Or do you want to know if his music is considered emo because his lyrics tend to be sad? Making sad music doesn't make you emo. I see in order to be considered emo, you need to have music in the style of the bands I previously mentioned, and you need to look like them. Despite having sad lyrics, Rob and his band don't fit that description, I think.
