i need to find a book about flying fortresses, the author flys restored fortresses, cover...?

paper back book, an older book. has a picture of the author on the back, sitting in a cockpit of a b 17. it has the history of the b 17's, and actual war stories in it of the survival of the flyin fortress., and actual bomb raids. the front has a picture of a b 17 with a jeep and other planes in the background. a man is on one wing working on it with several others standing on the runway. all help is appreciated to find the correct title and or name of author.
I think you’re looking for a book called "Flying Forts" by Martin Caidin. Mr. Caidin was an excellent author of both fiction and nonfiction. He wrote a book called "Cyborg" which was the basis for "The Six Million Dollar Man."
He was also an avid aviator and a recognized authority on aeronautics and aviation. He flew a B-17 in 1961 as part of a formation that flew from the US to England. (The last formation flight of B-17s ever.) It’s impossible to tell for sure if the book "Flying Forts" is the one you’re talking about because different publication runs of the book would have different cover art. But from your description of the picture of the author in the cockpit, it’s probably Mr. Caidin. Also, the book was published in 1968, so it’s an "older book".
